New York Times’ take — factual and balanced.  Here’s the commentary on the disclosures in the ad format:

This is an attempt to solve a significant problem. On any one Web page, there may be several ads, each from different ad networks that have very different policies. Most publishers’ Web sites have privacy policies that offer only very generic descriptions of the sorts of things that ad networks might do. By putting its name on the ads it serves, Google is telling users what it takes responsibility for.

They also point out the BlueKai has some of these features, in terms of being able to see the preferences they are storing about you.
